Unnakkaya Recipe | Malabar Special Sweet
Unnakkaya / Unnakkai is a spindle-shaped sweet made of plantain stuffed with coconut filling. It is originated from the Malabar region of India and is often eaten at a wedding, iftar and other festivities.
It is a simple snack that everyone can be made easily with available ingredients at home. We can include scrambled eggs in the filling. Here I am sharing an eggless Unnakkaya.

INGREDIENTS
- Grated Coconut - 3 tablespoons
- Sugar - 2 tablespoons
- Cardamom Powder - 1 teaspoon
- Ghee - 1 tablespoon + 1 tablespoon
- Few cashews and raisins
- Oil for frying
- Firstly steam the bananas in a steamer until they are cooked.
- Let them cool, then peel the skin off.
- Cut the bananas lengthwise and remove the seed threads.
- Mash the bananas using a spoon or fork into the very smooth dough without any lumps.
- Then divide the banana paste into lemon sized balls. Keep it aside.
- Now let's make the filling. Heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a pan.
- Fry cashews and raisins until golden. Do not brown too much. And keep it aside.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of ghee in a pan.
- Add grated coconut and saute for 5 minutes till the colour change.
- Then add sugar for sweetness.
- Also, add cardamom powder.
- Then add fried cashews and raisins. Now the filling is ready. Allow it to cool.
- Grease your palm lightly with oil and take a banana ball and flatten it with your thumb.
- Place 1 or 2 teaspoons of coconut filling in the centre.
- Bring the edges together to cover the filling.
- Roll into a cylindrical shape with elongated edges.
- Do the same for remaining.
- Heat oil in a pan for frying.
- When the oil is heated up, place the banana dumplings into the oil.
- Fry them until light golden brown colour.
- Finally, drain over a kitchen towel and serve it.
BONUS TIPS
- Use ripen plantains. Don't use over ripen plantains.
- You can use jaggery instead of sugar for sweetness.
- You can increase or decrease the quantity of sugar, based on your taste.
- If you like eggs you can include in the filling.
